Social Contract for School

Step 6: When all groups have shared their answers to the four questions and the teacher has organized the answers for the entire class. Next, take a picture of the contract to which everyone contributed. Try these non-sexist terms to appeal to a class of students in elementary school, as well as ways to customize the language to be more neutral in class. Step 8: The teacher should assign a few students as class representatives to support all new students who come to class throughout the school year. Their task will be to go through class norms and the class social contract. You should also encourage the new student to sign the social contract to fulfill their commitment (pp. 7, 29-35). Step 7: The teacher must make an enlarged copy of the contract during their plan or free time to bring it back to class the next day. Once the contract has been created for each class, all students should be asked to sign it as their commitment to it. The Statutes are one of the most important and necessary instruments of the CKH programme. According to Flippen (2015), the social contract acts as a behavioral agreement between teacher and student in the classroom. The social contract must be established during the first week of school and requires the participation of teachers and students. In addition, the teacher must conclude a social contract for each of his classes.

If teachers try to shorten this process and create only one contract, the desired results will not be achieved (p. 29, para. 1). The next step in creating a class contract is to ask your students to propose three behaviors or actions that they want to include in the contract. Encourage your students to start their sentences with “do” instead of “don`t do.” Link your class contract to your class reward system and reward your students for meeting their commitment to the class contract. Explain to your students that a class contract is a written or oral agreement on how to make the classroom a great place to learn and have fun. Ask your students the following key questions: Step 1: The teacher should “sell” the idea of a social contract and emphasize the importance for students to create their own contract that determines how they want to be treated by each other and by the teacher. In addition, they must also take into account how the teacher wants to be treated by the students. The next step in creating a class social contract is to lay the groundwork and discuss the value of respect. Then, encourage your students to design their perfect classroom with the rules they want to see in their social contract – this is where you really get their approval! This is still the brainstorming phase, so no idea is (yet) off the table. Many of the class expectations that are part of your class contract are based on what I like to call the three pillars of respect: explicit praise in the context of your class contract is crucial. For example, “I`m going to give Lachie a point of the table because I noticed he was looking at Sophie when she spoke.” Right now, your students will be full of ideas on how to make your classroom a great place! In addition, they will know why a social contract is important in the classroom and how they will benefit from it.

Let`s go back here for a second and talk about what it means when a student signs a social contract in class. They don`t gather in a pod without you and come up with a bunch of absurd guidelines that allow them to eat a lot of candy and ignore their math lessons. There are many ways to create a student-led classroom social contract with your class. It`s just a proven way. If you start the school year with a social contract in the classroom, you can let your students know what is expected of them during the 180 days of school and the consequences of not following the rules. Win, win, don`t you? But all these class guidelines and even the consequences won`t mean much if you don`t have a student`s buy-in. Believe me, it`s worth planning, preparing and doing every minute. I would love to see your own unique student-led class contracts. This process should take no more than two lessons. However, it is important to have these contracts on the wall and make them visible to students every day.

When students break the social contract, teachers should refer to the social contract and report it when addressing students for their actions. Your WHY class is the goal, cause, or belief that leads you to create, implement, and adhere to a student-led class contract. For a special touch that will leave a great impression, frame your class contract to give it extra meaning.
